We spent most of the pandemic years working on songs with the Spawn ( aka my kid, NB). We both worked on the lyrics and song melodies and found royalty free music ( our purchased rights to instrumentals) to create something together. A is a base but has a crazy range, so they love doing harmonies hehe. We filmed the videos with our phones, on weekends around our beautiful province.
If any of you are music creators, please post your bandcamp or other places we can support it? A is finally learning an instrument and I pretty much lost my ability to read music when I had my chemotherapy a few years back ( ah, the joys /s) so while I can't really write music anymore I freaking LOVE hearing it, so please post away!

Checking these out right now. This is awesome! Wow, they're voice is really pure and powerful. These are all great. I think my favorite is the last one. It's just really nice, I love the vibe of the music and the video, too. It's giving me feels. ;;
Did you record and mix these yourselves on a computer? What instrument are they learning? It's all really exciting. Also, don't you have another family member who makes music? I seem to remember it but I don't know who it was. Anyhow it's really awesome and it all sounds/looks great, especially for having made it yourself. I struggle a lot with recording/mixing, it's a pain. But these really do sound good and I'm excited for you and A. :>
edit: Does A have a bandcamp or place they sell the recordings?

Thank you!! <3 We needed a creative outlet for mental health, and it was really lovely we were able to do it together. <3 We are incredibly lucky to live in a beautiful place... BC has some amazing settings. If you were able to see the Twisting Wind now, that was a park about half hour from us, so it just makes it easier to do some indie filmmaking.
Aiden is working on learning the guitar, though I wish it was the banjo -- I think a banjo song with their voice would be freaking amazing.
We do have a friend who owns a music studio and gave us a friends rate for the mixing and recording - Aiden's mic set up is great for their voiceover work, but because their base voice is so low it has a tendency to... kinda short the mic? So you get static, haha. Recording them in studio was a blast.
Would love to send you the mp3s of their songs if you just want to download them!

I'm listening to "Imperfect Days" again, for the record. I like them all but that one's the current favorite. The videos are definitely beautiful and the locations look awesome. Also there's lots of interesting and creative shots. Definitely looks like it has been an inspiring and fun project to work on!
Wow, it's truly sad to hear that about your sister/family. But great to hear that you have a friend with a music studio! Man, I want one of those, haha! Yeah, having good equipment at home is a challenge (also having the space to set it all up).
I bet if A learns the guitar they will eventually branch out to other instruments, it's just inevitable! I started off with ukulele (cause it was small and easy to carry) but now I can do pretty well with guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. It comes naturally to grab the next thing; a lot of the concepts transfer easily so it's quicker to learn another instrument after the first. :>
Yes, I'd love mp3's of A's songs!

Thank you ! 'Imperfect Days' its probably the one that I'm closest to in terms of creation. There's a lot of melancholy on moving places/ stages in life and still holding on to those bits of your soul the people you've met touched and changed, right? The whole playlist is sort of a journey as we worked out feelings through a tough few years, but Imperfect Days was the last one we worked on.
I am 100% hopeful that guitar is a gateway instrument hahah! Here's hoping...!! Hearing how you've taken up such a variety is super freaking inspiring.... let me know if there's a place I can check out your stuff, I'd love to hear it!!
Do here's a dropbox folder, let me know if that works for you? Aiden SongsAlternatively, Aiden's Bandcamp has them- you can download for free: acete.bandcamp.com/ ( we had them up as a donation to the Trevor project)

Yeah, the emotions really come through in these tracks and the lyrics are beautiful.
Thanks! Seems that the dropbox link isn't working but I can get them from bandcamp. I don't have too much to show, myself, haha. Most of what I have is just messing around, or stuff I mainly play live. Folk tunes on fiddle, etc. I haven't felt too motivated to record them because many recordings already exist. I have a few original songs, though! I'll link a few tracks here and there are a few more on the soundcloud profile. :> Maybe one day I'll get a decent setup going and actually record some stuff I'm happy with. xD

I need to remember my Soundcloud so I can follow you! These are amazing... I may be kind of obsessed with wetland story though -- is that marimba?? What percussion were you using? I'm trying to identify the instruments... it has such a fantasy vibe, I love it. There were some... duck sounds? Sent the pupper looking for them, haha. And "Don't get lost"... banjo right? Gives me shivers. There's something so pure about it, I could listen to it all day. Now to scope out your other ones! What mic do you use to record them, btw?

Glad you likem. :> Wetland story was done completely in a software called FLStudio using downloaded sound samples! So I didn't actually play any of the instruments on that one, I just arranged it using samples assigned to a midi keyboard. That's supposedly a heron sound clip according to the site I downloaded it from, haha! Yup, "Don't Get Lost" is Banjo. :> For some of these I used a condenser mic from a company called Blue (I think the first song posted used that mic). It might be the Bluebird? I'm not sure since I actually ended up selling it. Not cause I didn't like it but because I never found myself with enough space to set it up. It's a sensitive mic so you need a good stand/table for it and that just wasn't working with my lifestyle at the time. A few of the others were likely recorded with a Blue Snowball which is a very cheap USB mic. Some of the ones on the soundcloud were recorded with just my phone, so ahh. Not great. But sometimes you just gotta work with what you have when the mood hits!

That makes sense; Aiden uses a Blue Yeti for their VO and has been pretty good, but we got them one of those little wraparound shields to help isolate sound. ( This one: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07N3SX1RL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) You really do have to have a space for it because they pick up everything, so the shield made it easier for them to be able to do it at a desk. Instruments I think would be trickier though? Love hearing your banjo!! I'm going to look into FL Studio and check it out too, that sounds so fun!

Fl Studio is great! It's powerful and awesome, though I did find the interface to feel a little confusing until I got the hang of it. I also use a program called Presonus "Studio One" which has become my favorite in recent years! It's just really intuitive and easy to use in my opinion, as a person coming from the art side of things. (tmi here, but just in case you are interesting in knowing: if you ever need a USB interface, presonus makes one and it comes bundled with the software. that said because the software is kinda expensive but it's a one time payment not a subscription so that's cool! it comes in tiers and the "artist" tier is the cheapest one with the most features, such as virtual instruments which are very useful).
oops, I hit post before I was done, hence the edit:
I had that experience with my mic as well, i actually wrapped it in tissue a few times... hahaha. a real pop shield is probably the best way to go.
I'm pretty inexperienced overall but I've felt that recording instruments is actually easier than recording the voice! maybe that's just because I don't like how I sing, hahaha. I dunno. if your instrument has a pickup you can plug it directly into an interface box which is also neat! xd

I don't compose anything yet, but I've recently discovered there's finally an accessible open source DAW that I was going to give a try. It's not as robust as FL Studio or Logic but for free (and doesn't require a weird sign up like Cakewalk) I figure it's worth giving a try. lmms.io/

I know that Reaper is good, it isn't free but for the longest time they never enforced that you buy a license and the demo was fully functional. So, basically, it was free if you just clicked "cancel" when the demo-expired screen came up. I dunno the status of that, currently. I don't have problem paying for software I really like but it is nice to know about the free options. Downloading LMMS right now~!
