Holy butts it's 2023. D: BUT. I'm finally through my art and holiday market deadlines and would love to throw down for a sketch trade. Feel free to delete if I'm overstepping, but I feel like I remember Ray saying anyone can start a trade (and I could be totally wrong, and if I am, I apologize).
So... February sketch trade anyone? I can randomize assignments if multiple ppl sign up; we can start at the beginning of Feb and have sketches due by Feb 28th.
Yew, Ember, or Aislinn
(Edit: Woohoo! I'll send assignments at the end of January!)

Yes!! Thank you for posting a trade! I got very distracted in January with lots of life stuff and just didn't do it, and I was probably about to forget February, too. I really love the idea that anyone can post trades and I'm really happy you did. I envision this forum to be a casual team effort to keep ourselves drawing! With that said, I am signing up! >:D any character would be awesome: showquestlog.unsatisfiedjalapeno.com/ocs.html

How about Akiko this time? Here's a somewhat rambling bio I made recently. I don't expect you to read it all but if you want unnecessarily detailed information here it is xD Akiko Kuga
Looks: Akiko is 5’5 with an athletic build, olive skin, brown eyes, and straight black hair that falls to her upper back. She often wears her hair in a low ponytail though sometimes she acquiesces and lets Tadaka put it into more extravagant styles. She has a tattoo on her forehead of five horizontal red bars. The reason for the tattoo is a secret. She dresses practically in a mix of traditional samurai clothing and pieces from other cultures (some present on Earth and some more fantastical) that she has gathered on her travels. In particular she has a magic armor set woven from reeds which was made for her by a friend.
Backstory: In life Akiko was a male samurai who worked as a retainer for a noble house in the 1500s. Her partner and lover was Takahiro until he was killed in battle at 28. She buried her grief and won her daimyo’s favor with her valor and clever politicking, ultimately commanding her own unit until her own death at 34. When she died she was collected by Takahiro who had somehow learned the secret to drifting between the worlds of the living and the dead and revealed he had been visiting her every year on her birthday. In Hookyland she was free to take whatever form she wanted and decided she would prefer to appear as a female. Takahiro took this to be a symbol of her devotion to him and she lived with him as his wife, happily at first but found that she chafed under the restrictions of the relationship. Finally she’d had enough and broke things off, leaving on fairly bad terms. Takahiro expected her to take the form of a male again but she did not, stating firmly that she was what she knew herself to be and it had nothing to do with their relationship. On that note she became a traveler, eventually meeting Tadaka, another wandering soul and despite their differences the two became good friends and travelling companions.
Powers: Akiko doesn’t have any magical ability but she does possess a set of magic armor that gives her the strength of ten people and allows her to take blows that would otherwise cause mortal wounds. The catch is that each time she avoids death one of the flower buds embroidered on the back opens and once they are all open she must succumb to all the damage her body should have taken and finally die. Because of this she only wears the armor when absolutely necessary.
Personality: Serious bordering on grumpy but not rigid. She has a complicated relationship with tradition having grown up in a very conservative military environment which she still feels connected to in some ways. On the other hand her falling out with Takahiro and friendship with Tadaka have made her embrace new ways of thinking, particularly about herself and her role in the world. She feels what a modern person might call gender fluid, oscillating between feeling like a woman and feeling nonbinary. She doesn’t feel the need to define it or try to talk about it with most people but she does deeply appreciate people like Tadaka who seem to understand effortlessly. She has a deep sense that the world should be just and if presented with an opportunity to set a wrong right she will do so without hesitation. Generally she has a very measured approach to this even if she doesn’t always see the nuance in situations and rarely acts rashly. She quietly appreciates Tadaka for her more direct and emotionally charged approach though she wouldn’t admit it readily. Her actions betray her true feelings however as she joins her friend in many of her spontaneous plans.
Close relationships:Tadaka- Her best friend and travelling companion. She’s often the voice of reason between the two of them which leads to arguments but they always make up and work together well at the end of the day. Wani- Akiko likes Wani a lot and feels a kinship with him because both of them were born a different gender than they ended up realizing they were. She also doesn’t trust him as far as she can throw him and doesn’t appreciate it at all when he hits on her. Takahiro- A distant ex at this point. She doesn’t think of him often and though there are still some lingering resentments they are not an important part of her life. She did keep his last name, mostly out of habit. Exorcista/Anika- The two met by chance when Akiko was possessed during an attempt to kill a demon that was plaguing a settlement. After she was healed Akiko taught the meek girl to fight as thanks and now returns to check on her every few years. Vytautas- Exorcista’s familiar. Akiko finds the large unruly creature a little bit exasperating as he doesn’t seem bound by any kind of manners and mostly oriented toward foraging for food and shirking work. www.sarahpetrulis.com/images/2010/akikowhispy.jpgwww.sarahpetrulis.com/images/2011/akikocats.jpgI haven't designed the magic armor yet or otherwise done a lot of visual development for her updated design so feel free to take creative liberties <3

ok, I did it!! And thanks again for hosting it this month, Amy. I wouldn't have done it. (actually I should post a march sign up now before I totally space out on it again, ahh) Yew! because I don't think I've drawn her maybe ever, somehow? I feel like the pose is a little funny here because I used a ref but then changed the angle, and then it was feb 26th. heheee. I just kinda guessed at an activity that Yew might enjoy and rock climbing came to mind. :> Attachments:

I'm glad you liked her, Amy!! Fun to draw. >:D
And, oh man, wow, Rshi! I knew it was him right away as i slowly scrolled down, mhahaha. This drawing is totally stunning, so much detail. I could just look at the teapot and spider "still life" in the corner and feel satisfied, yet there is so much more. ;; His costume is amazingly perfect; you used so many of the details from his design but in a unique way that is really refreshing to look at and different from things i've drawn before. also the way you handled his dreadlock ponytail is really nice and realistic. his facial features and expression are amazing. i feel really feel some of that ol' excitement looking at this! some nice energy. :> uagh and the tree in the background and just how nicely drawn it is, i feel spoiled. >:D thank you so much Sarah!!

Omg Amy no it's perfect! I always love your drawings of Akiko and it is great to have a new one to add to my collection> The line art has so much confidence and movement in it. It looks like the pencils for an animation cel from a super high budget movie or something. I love how the graceful sweeping lines of the hair get picked up in the clothing and overall gesture. This is such eye candy ;; thank you so much.
